  • Are oats gluten-free?
Avenin is a protein present in oats and is a form of gluten, so oats are not technically gluten free. Those who suffer from Celiac disease will not be able to enjoy oat-based products. However, many people who are gluten intolerant do not have a problem with Avenin. You will need to experiment with oat products or check with your doctor to determine whether you can tolerate Avenin.
  • How are organic oats produced?
Organic agriculture is the practice of producing food, for human and/or animal consumption by replacing most synthetic pesticides and fertilizers with products that are permissible under the USDA guidelines for organic production and/or independent organic certification agencies. For example, glyphosate and anhydrous ammonia are replaced with biological pest control and manure composts respectively. Smile Foods oat products use exclusively organic oats.
